The Philadelphia School Reform Commission expresses a desire to introduce a plan that will, as opponents from schoolteachers, the Occupy movement and organized labor charge:
*Closes 64 schools and keeps the names secret
*Pushes 40% of our students into charters
*Turns all of our schools over to third-‐party operators
*Tells us to live with a budget that short changes our children
The state - ie governor Corbett - is withholding sate money that was previously dedicated to the Philly School District. Why would he do this? He would obviously like to introduce a "shock doctrine" and force the Philly School district to privatize out each school in Philly to the highest bidder. What better way to corrupt a system than to require campaign contributions to take over a school? The Philly school district has problems, everyone knows that, but what the solution would be? There are more solutions that Governor Corbett's give away to private companies to run the school.
Pennsylvania governor Corbett came to Philly to speak to a group of businesspeople who had paid $180 a pop to get to meet with him. We didn't have that kind of money so we threw a separate celebration of our own outside!
If you thought my previous articles were too long, well, here ya go!
I have been meaning to write this for months but it seems especially relevant given several of OP and other North American Occupy communities' recent discussions:
The day started with me checking into the Occupy Wall Street live stream while I waited for my nephew johnny and his girlfriend Chrissy to arrive so we could PATCO it over to the Chinatown bus and get our May Day on. Chinatown bus doesn’t accept credit cards and since we were all buying the tickets on one credit card and hadn’t brought enough cash we went around the corner to Greyhound and bought one way tickets to NYC.
